3rd.	Government approves compensation of up to £2,000 for each house destroyed by German bombers.

5th.	4,000 German troops believed drowned when British submarine torpedoes transport ship Marion.
	Rumania government and Parliament dissolved and constitution suspended. Germans seize all Jewish business in Luxembourg.
8th.	Blitz begins on London and kill 412 people.
9th.	Germany loses 27 planes over Britain in air battles.
11th	TO THE PEOPLE OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA BROADCAST 11th September 1940 Churchill tells House of Commons that he expects Germany will try to invade next week.
15th.	Survey shows that two thirds of London people are getting under 4 hrs. sleep a night because of the bombing.
15th.	> RAF wins 'The Battle of Britain' by destroying 61 German planes for the loss of 29. Legless Fighter Pilot Douglas Bader
19th.	German invasion fleets starts to pull out of Channel ports.
21st.	Permission to use Underground Railway Stations as bomb shelters.
23rd.	Himmler orders all gold teeth to be removed from dead camp inmates.
27th.	All Jews forced to carry special identity cards in France.
28th.	First of 50 old destroyers arrive from U.S.A.
29th.	Luxembourg incorporated into German Reich.
30th	Civilian casualties of Blitz this month are 6,954 killed and 10,615 hurt.
October 1940.
1st.	Jewish slave labour used to improve roads in Poland to Russia.
3rd	All Jews ordered to move in to Jewish district of Warsaw
	Not under German pressure - the Vichy regime bans Jews from employment and the army.
4th.	Churchill asks Roosevelt to send ships to defend Singapore.
7th.	Algerian Jews deprived of their French citizenship
8th.	Churchill reports civilian deaths from air raids now fallen to 3,000 a week.
9th.	Bomb falls on St. Paul's Cathedral. German War Planes over the Cliffs of Dover and Southern England
	Churchill elected Tory Party leader - unanimously.
10th.	A German run plebiscite in Luxembourg shows that 97% of population opposes Nazi occupation of country.by abstaining.
11th	German raiders bomb Liverpool sinking 4 ships.
	Petain tells Frenchmen they must abandon traditional ideas of who is their ally and who is their foe.
12th.	Hitler postpones invasion of Britain to April 1941.
13th.	154 people killed in a shelter in Stoke Newington in a night bombing raid.
15th	Mussolini invades Greece.
	War at Sea City of Coventry destroyed and 64 people killed in Balham Underground Station when it was bombed.
	16 million men in U.S.A.register for draft.
17th	R.A.F. bombers attack naval base at Kiel.
	German air raids over England killed 1,567 people.
18th	Jews banned from public media, and all positions of authority in France.
21st.	"DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE"  Churchill broadcasts to French people. 21st October 1940.
	Liverpool suffers its 200th air raid.
	Eggs to up to 4 shilling a dozen and purchase tax on all goods except food and children's clothes.
22nd.	5,000 German Jews deported to camps in France.
25th.	RAF bombs Berlin and Hamburg.
28th	U-boats sink S.S.Empress of Britain.
	The Royal Navy on Convoy Duty
NOVEMBER 1940
4th	First night since the Blitz began (on September 7th) that London was not raided.
11th	Dachau. 55 Polish intellectuals executed in Dachau first official mass execution.
	German guards violently break up patriotic demonstration by students at Arch de Triomphe.
12th.	Hitler issues 18th war directive to bring Spain into war and death by slow strangulation of Britain's convoy supplies.
13th.	Hitler orders invasion of Russia next May.
19th.	Germans execute a gentile for throwing bread over the wall of Warsaw Polish Ghetto.
23rd.	Southampton heavily bombed.
28th	Churchill inspects air raid damage. Liverpool suffers devastating air raids.
29th.	Liverpool suffers devastating air raids again.
30th	4,588 people killed and 6,202 badly injured in air raids in U.K. this month.
DECEMBER 1940.
8th.	Churchill inspects the destruction of the House of Commons.   House of Commons and Tower of London bombed.
11th	Birmingham heavily bombed
12th.	Sheffield heavily bombed.
17th.	Roosevelt announces lend-lease.
16th	RAF bombs Mannheim in revenge for Coventry - very little damage done.
	Franco refuses to join Hitler an invade Gibraltar
20th	Liverpool bombed heavily again.
21st	Jews and Freemasons banned in Bulgaria.
25th	The King and Churchill Churchill gives King a copy of his one piece 'siren' suit. (A zip up warm suit invented by Churchill for emergencies during the bombing.
27th	Over 100 German bombers raid London. Note Churchill has no tie on. Churchill and the King and Queen inspect Buckingham Palace Bomb damage.
29th	Fire watching in London made compulsory.
30th	Civilian Air Raid causalities in December 3,793 dead and 5,244 seriously injured .

The purpose of these pages is to tell the story of Churchill's life - not to give a detailed account of the wars he was involved in, for that is a vast subject.

To obtain an idea of the cause and magnitude of the war, examine the monthly calendar for each year - they include many photographs.

It is important to remember that heavy censorship of news took place throughout them, and therefore knowledge of many of these events was not available until long after they happened - or until after the wars had ended.
