It was the surprise (?) attack on USA Navy at Pearl
Harbour that brought American public opinion round to the
need to join the war and defeat Germany and Japan. It is
claimed by some historians that Roosevelt knew about
Japanese plans to attack the US Navy.

in Paris.

they never recover from it.
