The United States stand at this moment at the summit of the world.
To the multitudes thronging streets of cities all over the globe in protest against the war we ask .....
"Why did you not protest years ago about Saddam Hussein's cruelties to his countrymen - nor do so even today ?
It could be argued that by your actions you strengthen Saddam's resolve and that this has already caused many deaths.
Are you not thoughtlessly doing Saddam's work for him and making the work of the coalition forces even more difficult ?
The President of the USA and our Prime Minister have had heaped upon them over the last three months, hostility of an intensity equal to that endured by Churchill during the years he warned about the threat of Hitler. It is as difficult for them as it was for Churchill, to bring home to people the terror that tyrants like Hussein would inflict if allowed to remain in power.
To argue for UN inspectors to be allowed more time, or to wait further for a second UN resolution, was to miss the tide, both psychologically, seasonally, and militarily.
Terrorists the world over have observed the results of the UK and USA governments' appeasement of the IRA. Terrorist leaders can never give up power because they fear their own murder. The only argument they comprehend is force
To argue as so many do, that the war is all about oil, is to forget who lit and who put out the oil well fires of the Gulf War. The Americans had they desired, could have found many sound reasons for remaining in control of those wells. That they did not, gives the lie to those who claim that America wants to control the region.
Yes, oil flows are falling world-wide and will continue to fall, but there will be no shortage for many years yet, and in any event oil, like coal, will be superseded by far cleaner energy.
Whilst the UN remains incapable of policing terrorist regimes; then the Allies must do so. For freedom from terrorism to be achieved, the Allies must identify and take into custody the ring leaders. The very nature of today's weapons justifies pre-emptive force to disarm tyrants.
What therefore is the cause of so many Muslim families loathing the West?
Until we answer truthfully there will be no peace.
