About England's Patron Saint St George's Day is 23rd of April It is thought that St. George came from Cappadocia in Asia Minor and lived at the time of the Roman Emperor, Diocletian, AD 245 to 313, and became a high ranking cavalry officer in the Army of Rome. He refused to carry out Diocletian's orders for Christian persecution and, in consequence, suffered torture and death himself. He was canonized in AD 494, Pope Gelasius proclaiming him one of those "whose names are justly revered among men but whose acts are known only to God". The legend of St. George, which is an allegory illustrating the triumph of good over evil, tells how he rode into the city of Silene in what is now Libya, to find the people terrorized by a dragon which was fed daily with one of the citizens. The next victim was to be Cleolinda, daughter of the King, but St. George rode out, slew the dragon and freed the people from their oppressor. St. George was the Patron Saint in the Arthurian Legend of the Knights of the Round Table.

But how many people wear a red rose on St George's Day? How many even know the date of St Georges Day or that he has been England's Patron Saint since the 14th century when he was so designated by Edward III?	Windsor Castle Royal County of Berkshire
Coronation Coach	Is it not surprising that England, claiming to be a Christian country, pays so little heed to her patron saint?
To the extent that a Suffolk landlord applying for an extension of licensing hours for the celebration of St Patrick's and St George's Days was granted the former but refused the latter!	St Georges Chapel Royal Windsor Castle
St George slaying the Dragon	There are indeed dragons still to be slain, and perhaps the dragon of indifference is the hardest to overcome.
So let the red rose of England take its place with the Thistle, the Daffodil and the Shamrock.

Let us wear it as a symbol, not of aggressive nationalism, but of pride in our history and faith in our future, and let us fly the flag of St George as a statement of our Christian heritage.
