W.1.Dear Sir
We quote from The Daily Telegraph last week.
Where is the BBC's Churchill tribute? Back in 2002, you may recall, the BBC commissioned a telephone poll of viewers to find the greatest Briton of all time. In the Great Britons series that followed, Sir Winston Churchill beat Isambard Kingdom Brunel, emerging victorious after his cause was championed by the former Cabinet minister Mo Mowlam.
The Beeb made a six-figure profit from the premium-rate phone lines used for the vote, and announced at the time that it would be spent on "a memorial to the greatest Briton", expected to be a painting or statue. Shortly after, a panel - including BBC bigwigs and art critic Richard Cork - was given the job of selecting a winning idea from proposals submitted by five artists. Strangely, however, little has been heard about the venture since.
At the beginning of this year, it was reported that the plans for the memorial would be unveiled in February. But nothing has materialised. Eager to discover why the wartime leader has yet to be accorded the tribute promised almost a year and a half ago (and already paid for with viewers' money), Spy called the BBC yesterday.
"Things have moved on," said a spokesman, "but we're not in a position to release any details." As to why it is taking so long, he added: "We want to get it right. We hope to make an announcement shortly."
Upon the instructions of the Committee I am enclosing some papers and a CD of THE CHURCHILL MUSIC asking that you will consider Rutherlyn's music as a very worthy tribute to Churchill.
SincerelyJudith O'Hanlon (Mrs)
Secretary.
A follow up letter asking for a reply has also been ignored.
This is a common experience by everyone who writes to the BBC.______________ July 31st 2004 The BBC displays its " memorial to the greatest Briton" Sir Winston Churchill. The editor of this page, when a toddler, had a set of these building blocks. The BBC refuses to say how much money this programme made; or how much the above cost to make:
how the 'artist' was selected, and why he had to 'computer create' his 'ideas'
when such toys are commonplace and also used by psychiatrists in testing backward children's mental abilities.______________________ ![]()
